The Government of Canada Introduces the Build Canada Homes Act

MP Philip Earle, Welcomes New Legislation to Build Affordable Housing in Labrador

 

Today, Member of Parliament Philip Earle welcomed the tabling of the Build Canada Homes Act, new federal legislation that will help accelerate the construction of more affordable homes in communities like [local community/region] and across Canada.

The bill will formally establish Build Canada Homes (BCH) as a Crown corporation with the tools it needs to deliver on its mandate to act as Canada’s Affordable Housing Builder. Build Canada Homes will work with all orders of government, non‑profits, Indigenous partners, and developers to accelerate housing construction.

MP Earle highlighted the importance of Build Canada Homes for Labrador, where demand for housing continues to grow. Build Canada Homes’ ability to deploy capital quickly, streamline partnerships, and support modern methods of construction that reduce costs and shorten timelines, supporting projects that increase the supply of affordable housing in communities across Canada.

As a Crown corporation, Build Canada Homes will be funded through the initial capitalization of $13 billion that was announced in Budget 2025.

 

Build Canada Homes will continue to operate as a Special Operating Agency until the legislation receives Royal Assent and is brought into force by the Governor-in-Council.

  • Launched on September 14, 2025, Build Canada Homes is Canada’s new federal agency with the mandate to build affordable housing across Canada. By leveraging public lands, deploying flexible financial tools, and acting as a driver for modern methods of construction, Build Canada Homes is creating a more productive and innovative homebuilding sector. Build Canada Homes will continue to operate as a Special Operating Agency until the Act receives Royal Assent, and the Crown corporation is operational.
  • Build Canada Homes will implement the Government of Canada’s Buy Canadian Policy by prioritizing projects that use Canadian materials, strengthen domestic supply chains, and create good jobs. Every new home will mean more demand for Canadian steel, lumber, and aluminum—helping workers and businesses thrive.
  • In parallel, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation continues to focus on commercial solutions to support the housing system, including through existing programs like the Apartment Construction Loan Program and mortgage insurance products.
  • To streamline and strengthen federal efforts to build affordable housing, key elements of Canada Lands Company Limited will be transferred under the Build Canada Homes portfolio. This move enables Build Canada Homes to leverage Canada Lands Company’s existing land holdings and development expertise to accelerate the delivery of affordable housing across the country.
