Re: Urgent Request for Ministerial Review and Long-Term Resolution Regarding the Wabush Airport Shutdown

Dear Minister MacKinnon:

I am writing to express my deep frustration and concern regarding the recent shutdown of operations at Wabush Airport in Labrador due to the suspension of firefighting and crash-rescue services. This incident has had a serious and far-reaching impact on the region disrupting travel for residents, impeding business operations, and interrupting critical access to medical and government services that depend on reliable air connectivity.

Wabush Airport is a vital transportation hub for all of Labrador West and neighbouring Fermont, Quebec. The abrupt cessation of operations under Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) 705 has underscored the vulnerability of this essential facility and raised legitimate questions about the adequacy of contingency planning and service continuity for northern and remote airports and most relevant, how did this happen.

Given the magnitude of the disruption and the clear regional dependence on this infrastructure, I am requesting that Transport Canada undertake a ministerial review of how this occurred, including the decision-making processes, oversight mechanisms, and communication between the relevant authorities. Furthermore, I am seeking a formal update from your department on the long-term stability and staffing of firefighting and emergency response services at Wabush Airport to ensure that such an interruption does not reoccur.

The people of Labrador West deserve assurance that their essential air transportation infrastructure is safeguarded through proactive planning, proper resourcing, and effective coordination between all responsible agencies. I believe this situation calls for immediate attention and ministerial oversight to restore public confidence and operational reliability.

Thank you for your immediate attention to this important matter and for assisting me to find the solution to see the critical transportation reopened. I look forward to your usual prompt response and to working together toward a permanent resolution that ensures the continued safety and accessibility of Wabush Airport.

Sincerely,

Philip Earle,

Member of Parliament, Labrador
